CBS report on road fatalities: more deaths in August - but also good news

A new report from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reveals a mixed picture regarding road fatalities in Israel. In August 2026, there was an increase in the number of deaths from road accidents compared to the same month last year and previous years. However, the report indicates a decrease in the total number of accidents and casualties. From a broader perspective, in January-August 2026, 300 people were killed – a 3.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2025 (310 fatalities), but a 15.4% increase compared to the multi-year average for the same period in 2022-2024. The total number of casualties decreased by 19.8% compared to last year and by 34.4% compared to the multi-year average. The number of road accidents with casualties stood at 4,312 – a 19% decrease compared to last year and 32.8% compared to the multi-year average. In August, 2,699 accidents with light injuries were reported, a 27.7% decrease compared to August 2025, and the number of lightly injured decreased by 31.8%. The trend in the number of casualties indicates a decrease at a rate of 1.3% from April 2025 to August 2026, following a period of a slight increase.
