An indictment was filed against a resident of Ofakim in his 30s, suspected of breaking into a synagogue and a mikveh in the city in an attempt to steal money. According to the indictment, filed by the Southern District Criminal Prosecution Unit, the suspect arrived last month at a synagogue in Ofakim, used a screwdriver to dismantle screws around the lock of the kitchenette door, entered the premises and rummaged through its contents. He then broke the lock of a cabinet, rummaged inside and left. Several days later, the suspect arrived at a mikveh in the city, entered the premises and tried to wrench a charity box from its place, causing property damage. Ofakim police officers launched a focused investigation after receiving reports, which led to locating the suspect and his arrest. The station commander, Deputy Chief Moshe Bohadana, stated that the officers are acting decisively against property offenders. The indictment was filed at the Be'er Sheva Magistrate's Court for breaking into a place of worship with intent to commit theft, willful damage to property, and breaking into a building that is not a dwelling.
