Security researchers at Graz University of Technology and the Austrian Center for Secure Information Technology have uncovered vulnerabilities in data transfer applications on Android phones, enabling attackers to intercept sensitive personal information, including photos, messages, and passwords, from up to 45 meters away without physical access to the devices. The study examined apps from seven major companies: Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, and Honor. The attacks did not require advanced equipment, as the researchers used gear costing less than 100 euros. The researchers confirmed that all seven companies have issued security updates to address the discovered vulnerabilities after being informed of the study's findings before publication. Data transfer apps rely on a direct wireless connection between two devices using Wi-Fi, but the study showed that this connection does not provide adequate protection for the exchanged information.
