The IDF announced the beginning of the process to award citations for the October 7 battles. The complex and sensitive process is expected to take months. This Wednesday, a conference will be held for all current brigade commanders in the IDF, who will arrive after consulting with those who were present in the kibbutzim during the day of the massacre. Each brigade will decide which individuals to recommend for a citation, after which it will go up to the division and command level, and ultimately the decision will be made by a dedicated committee whose members are not yet known. In the first stage, the focus will be on the battles that took place in the Gaza envelope kibbutzim on October 7 itself, and later the other events throughout the war will be examined. It is not yet known how many people will receive citations, as there is no quota and the number will be determined by the candidates who come forward. Those who do not receive a citation may receive a commendation from the brigade, division, or command commander. A security source told Channel 12: "This is going to be one of the most charged events since the beginning of the war. Defining the concept of 'heroism' according to technical parameters, on a day when there were countless acts of heroism - will be very complex."
