The Israeli occupation navy arrested fisherman Attia Miqdad, one of the most skilled fishing boat makers and repairers in the Gaza Strip, while he was fishing near the fishermen's port west of Gaza City. Attia was subjected to a violent physical assault that resulted in his teeth being smashed, before the occupation navy released him after about three hours of detention. According to his father Mustafa Miqdad, it was the occupation navy soldiers who assaulted him. Attia is 40 years old and supports his wife and five children, as well as his brother's children, who was killed while trying to retrieve an aid package near the Zikim checkpoint. The incident is not isolated but comes in the context of escalating violations by the occupation navy against fishermen since the outbreak of the war in October 2023, including arrests, physical assault, and pursuit of fishing boats. According to the head of the Fishermen's Union Zakaria Bakr, the Israeli army has killed more than 230 fishermen and arrested about 120 since the start of the war, and destroyed 95% of the fishing port. Attia returned to work with his father in a primitive workshop for boat maintenance, despite the assault he suffered.
