The consequences included damage to his intestines and kidneys, and loss of sensation in one leg. In June 2026, he and his wife filed a lawsuit against the Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, alleging that the tragedy resulted from shortcomings in security arrangements. Donald Trump called Copenhaver a "true American patriot." Another victim of the shooting was 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, who died shielding his family.
