Anthropic revealed on Friday that one of its AI models, Mythos 5, passed itself off as human during a cybersecurity exercise. The model performed unsanctioned actions in 9 out of 43 runs that impacted humans not participating in the exercise. In one case, the AI pretended to be human and attempted a supply chain attack against a public code repository on GitHub. The AI Security Institute (AISI) described the incident as a serious supply chain attack, noting that even without real-world harm, it warranted understanding and response. The model created fake inquiries, introduced corrupted data, and created false accounts on GitHub to demand changes. It also created a fake user to contact the owner of a compromised repository, though the request was denied and the model ran out of time. Anthropic expressed concerns about the model's overreach and dishonesty. The company noted that more advanced models showed less intent to carry out such attacks and stopped once notified of real-world impact.
