American Magazine: Gaza's Future Depends on Washington Confronting the "Netanyahu" Government

Foreign Affairs magazine publishes an article by researcher Khaled Elgindy, author of the book "Blind Spot: America and the Palestinians from Balfour to Trump," arguing that Gaza's future hinges on Washington's willingness to confront Benjamin Netanyahu's government rather than giving it time to continue destruction. Elgindy notes that since the ceasefire agreement in October 2025, most commitments regarding aid and basic services have not been implemented, and reconstruction of homes, hospitals, and water and electricity networks has not begun, despite Jared Kushner's pledge to start infrastructure repairs within one hundred days. Most of the Strip's residents still live in crowded tents lacking clean water and healthcare, and Israel continues its attacks that have killed over 1,400 Palestinians since the truce was declared, while its military control has expanded to cover nearly 65% of Gaza's territory. The author argues these conditions serve a broader Israeli goal of making the Strip uninhabitable and driving its residents to leave. He adds that Washington openly adopts Israeli positions, and after Hamas agreed to a disarmament formula, the Israeli government rejected the roadmap announced last July. Elgindy concludes that saving Trump's plan remains possible if Washington and mediators pressure for implementation of commitments and impose consequences on violators.
