"Am Yisrael Chai": The surprising support for Israel from the Belgian minister

Belgium, known for its sharp criticism of Israel, shows another side: Defense Minister Theo Francken tweeted "Am Yisrael Chai" on the anniversary of the massacre, and the president of the MR party took part in a memorial ceremony. Israel's new ambassador, David Saranga, presented his credentials on October 7 and published AI videos calling for dialogue.

Belgium, known as one of Israel's harshest critics in the European Union, is showing another side: alongside steps such as declaring Israeli ministers persona non grata and imposing restrictions on arms exports, Israel enjoys support among parts of the Belgian government. On the third anniversary of October 7, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken posted a three-word tweet: "Am Yisrael Chai," along with two blue-and-white hearts, at 6:29 — the hour when the Hamas attack began. Francken is known as a supporter of Israel and has attacked previous governments for their hostile attitude. The president of the MR party, Georges-Louis Bouchez, also took part in a memorial event alongside Israeli ambassador David Saranga and stressed Israel's right to defend itself. Saranga presented his credentials to King Philippe on October 7 and published AI videos in French, Flemish and Arabic calling for an end to boycotts and for dialogue with the moderate Muslim population.
