A Republican senator is demanding that the Senate Judiciary Committee summon Donald Trump Jr., the son of the sitting president, and Hunter Biden, the son of the former president, for an investigation into exploiting their proximity to the White House for personal gain. The demand, submitted by Senator John Curtis (Republican of Utah), is the first known instance of a Republican lawmaker calling for an investigation into the family of a sitting president. It follows revelations that a Russian oligarch named Omar Karmalev funded Trump Jr.'s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas earlier this year. In his letter to Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dick Durbin, Curtis wrote that "the country should not have one standard for a Republican president's family and another for a Democratic president's family." He cited Trump Jr.'s promotion of family-backed cryptocurrency ventures, international real estate deals involving meetings with foreign heads of state, and his reported investments in defense contracting. Curtis called for an investigation into the use of the president's family relationships for private financial gain, preferential treatment, or access by domestic and foreign interests.
