Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides harshly attacked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his speech at the UN General Assembly. Christodoulides directly referenced Erdogan's speech the previous day, in which he spoke about respecting international law and the sovereignty of states. The Cypriot president accused Turkey of "hypocrisy of the highest order," stating that "when it comes to Cyprus, Turkey does exactly the opposite." He noted that 52 years have passed since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, which he defined as "an act of aggression." Christodoulides accused Turkey of continuing to violate international law, preventing the return of displaced persons, and closing the Varosha area in violation of Security Council resolutions. He emphasized that the only framework for a solution is a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, and called on Erdogan to "give the green light for substantive negotiations."
