63-year-old loses his eyesight after Ozempic treatment - and sues

Todd Engel, 63, lost his vision in both eyes after treatment with Ozempic and is suing Novo Nordisk, claiming he was not warned of the risk. The company rejects the claims.

Todd Engel, 63, lost his vision in both eyes after treatment with the diabetes drug Ozempic (semaglutide) and is suing the manufacturer Novo Nordisk. Tests at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University diagnosed him with NAION, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, sometimes called a 'stroke of the eye.' According to him, doctors made clear there is no medication or surgery to restore his sight. Engel, who was forced to retire from his job as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver, claims the company did not adequately warn of the risk. Novo Nordisk stated that the totality of data does not confirm a causal link between the drugs and NAION, and that the lawsuits are baseless.
