"6 million": American network CNBC in a post dripping with Holocaust trivialization
The American financial news network CNBC published a short post on X with the number "six million" in English, intended to promote a report on Saudi oil exports. The context-free post became fertile ground for hate speech and Holocaust denial from trolls and deniers. The post was only removed after more than half a day, sparking harsh criticism over insensitivity.
The American financial news network CNBC published a short post on X last night, containing only the words "six million" in English. The original intention was to promote an economic report on a surge in Saudi oil exports in September to a level of six million barrels per day. However, the choice to publish the isolated number as a context-free teaser was seen as extreme negligence and an affront to the memory of the Holocaust. The post was quickly exploited by far-right and far-left activists, trolls, and Holocaust deniers, who flooded the discussion with mockery and conspiracies aimed at casting doubt on the scale of the Jewish genocide. Alongside the use of derogatory terms, users falsely claimed that the real number was only about 271,000. Many users directed harsh criticism at CNBC for insensitivity and trivialization, arguing that it was clear such a post would attract hate propaganda. The post, which had been live since the night hours, was removed and deleted by the network only in the afternoon (Israel time). The incident reflects the reality on social networks, where almost any resonant post attracts waves of hatred and antisemitism.
