43 whales died after being washed ashore on a remote rocky beach in New Zealand, despite extensive rescue efforts. The incident occurred on Thursday near Ngawi at the southeastern tip of the North Island. Volunteers, nature reserve staff, and schoolchildren tried to return the whales to the sea, but strong waves and sharp rocks hindered the efforts. According to authorities, none of the animals survived. The whales are of the pilot whale species, which can reach up to seven meters in length and weigh three tons. Project Jonah reported that many whales were already dead when rescuers arrived, and even those found alive died during the day. The Department of Conservation is working with local Māori communities to bury the animals, which are considered 'taonga' – a precious treasure – in Māori culture.
