Following the bank collapse: Paraguay's Senate unanimously impeached President Peña

Paraguay's Senate unanimously impeached President Santiago Peña after he announced his resignation following the collapse of a major bank. An arrest warrant was issued against him on suspicion of offenses related to the collapse. Vice President Pedro Aliana is expected to replace him.

Paraguay's Senate last night unanimously impeached President Santiago Peña, even though he announced his resignation yesterday following the collapse of one of the country's largest banks. All 44 senators present in the vote supported the impeachment, which was intended to prevent Peña from receiving the legal immunity granted to former presidents. Shortly after the vote, an arrest warrant was issued against Peña on suspicion of offenses related to the bank's collapse. Peña denies the allegations. Vice President Pedro Aliana is expected to replace him. The collapse affected about three million customers and sparked massive protests across the country. About two years ago, outgoing President Peña announced at the inauguration ceremony of the Israeli embassy in Paraguay that the Paraguayan embassy would reopen in Jerusalem in December.
