Will decide in 120 days: The 'AI force' Trump is assembling at the White House | Report
The White House is establishing a new government task force called the 'Super Intelligence Force', which will have 120 days to formulate recommendations regarding the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence. The task force will be headed by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton, who has effectively become the administration's 'AI czar'. The task force was established following a meeting convened by Trump with AI industry leaders, during which voluntary principles for self-regulation were agreed upon.
The White House is establishing a new government task force called the 'Super Intelligence Force', which will have 120 days to formulate recommendations regarding the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence, and to determine the role of the federal government in the field. This is according to Jay Clayton, the Director of National Intelligence, who spoke with the Wall Street Journal. The name was chosen in accordance with the nickname Trump himself uses for AI: 'Super Intelligence', or SI for short. Clayton himself will head the task force. 'The risk of not being first is high,' he told the Journal. 'Not being first increases the identified and unidentified risks—especially from our adversaries. Being first will allow us to address these risks for the benefit of the American people.' The establishment of the task force comes following a meeting convened by Trump at the White House this week, which was attended by AI industry leaders—including OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. During the meeting, the industry agreed on a series of voluntary principles: internal controls on model development, external audits, and updating the board of directors on safety efforts. Although Trump has so far advocated for minimal regulation, the establishment of the task force indicates a growing recognition within the administration that some government oversight is needed. Three deputy chairs will be appointed to the task force: Emil Michael, Deputy Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering; Scott Kupor, Director of the Office of Personnel Management; and Andrew Ferguson, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. Task force members will include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Treasury Bessent, and others. Venture capitalist David Sacks and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will serve as external participants.
