UN envoy against Israel: Indonesia should consider withdrawing from the peace council
Francesca Albanese, the UN special envoy, called on Indonesia to consider withdrawing from Trump's peace council, claiming that Israel and the US dictate its activities without Palestinian representation. Albanese suggested joining the Hague Group as an alternative.
Francesca Albanese, the UN special envoy for human rights in the Palestinian territories, called on Indonesia to reconsider its participation in the peace council of US President Donald Trump. In an interview with Reuters in Jakarta, Albanese claimed that Israel and the US dictate the council's activities, while Palestinians have no representation in it. She warned that Indonesia's participation could legitimize the mechanism and harm its historical ties with the Palestinians. Albanese suggested that Indonesia join the Hague Group, which includes South Africa and Malaysia, as an alternative. The peace council was presented in January by Trump as an international mechanism for conflicts, and it is supposed to oversee the interim administration in Gaza, without Palestinian representation. Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, joined the council and committed to sending troops to Gaza. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto pledged to withdraw if the council does not benefit the Palestinians. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry said that discussions in the council are frozen. Albanese, considered a sharp critic of Israel, has previously faced criticism and sanctions from the US.
