According to a CNN report, unauthorized users gained access to the personnel data center server in October 2025, but the Pentagon only discovered the flaw in July 2026 and worked to fix it. The center held at least 60 million records, and possibly around four million Department of Defense employees were affected by the breach. In a letter sent to those affected, it was stated that the Pentagon has no indications of misuse of the data, but experts warn that the information is a goldmine for foreign intelligence services or cybercriminals. The combination of occupational specialty data with Social Security numbers could provide adversaries with a clear picture of soldiers' roles in various regions around the world. The stolen data was not encrypted, contrary to standard security practices. A spokesperson noted that actions are being taken to improve cybersecurity, along with offering credit monitoring services. Expert Sherman warned that exposing the personal information of millions of soldiers is particularly dangerous while the US is waging war against Iran, and could enable phishing attacks, profiling, and foreign intelligence operations.
