Prof. Yoram Peri: The Forgotten Memory of Rabin – How They Managed to Obliterate an Assassination
Prof. Yoram Peri argues that Netanyahu's electoral success overshadowed the erasure of Yitzhak Rabin's memory. He cites a survey in which only 4% of high school students knew the date of the assassination, attributing the forgetting to the establishment of a memorial day on the Hebrew calendar by the Netanyahu government.
Prof. Yoram Peri argues that Benjamin Netanyahu's personal success in the recent elections diverted attention from another success: the erasure of Yitzhak Rabin's memory. According to him, since the assassination, a struggle has been waged between the commemoration camp and the forgetting camp, and the latter have won. Peri cites a survey from eight years ago in which only 4% of high school students knew the exact date of the assassination, and 65% did not answer at all. He attributes the forgetting to the establishment of a memorial day on the Hebrew calendar by the Netanyahu government, which created public confusion. The article is a personal opinion of a political sociologist, based on his previous research.
