Police officer took over a dead man's house, renovated it and was exposed due to one mistake
A Florida police officer, Brian Lewis Seguros, was arrested on suspicion of taking over the home of a man he found dead, renovating it over four years while using the deceased's identity, and was exposed after suing the heirs for reimbursement of renovation costs.
A Florida police officer, Brian Lewis Seguros, was arrested and charged with fraud and forgery after taking over the home of a man he found dead during a routine patrol in July 2022. Seguros claimed he was a friend of the deceased, Dennis Younis West, 71, and arranged his funeral while falsely stating that West had no relatives. He then took over the house, invested over $214,000 in renovations using West's identity to obtain permits, including forging a signature and notarization. The fraud was uncovered when West's legal heirs sought to claim the house, and Seguros sued them for reimbursement of renovation costs. The lawsuit triggered an investigation leading to his arrest. Seguros has been suspended from the Lauderdale Lakes Police Department and faces serious charges.
