The Polish government began taking over the Constitutional Court this evening (Friday), after duly elected judges were not allowed to enter the building. Police forces arrived at the scene, and supporters of the Law and Justice party began throwing objects at the officers. The background to the crisis is President Karol Nawrocki's refusal, associated with the previous government, to swear in judges elected in the past year. The police presence was intended to allow the judges to enter on Monday, at the start of the work week. Nawrocki, who was on his way to a visit to Senegal, canceled the visit and returned to Poland. Prime Minister Donald Tusk tweeted that restoring the rule of law is a duty, and that the process is difficult and painful but there is no other way.
