On Yom Kippur: Pro-Palestinian protesters harassed Jewish-Canadian journalist outside synagogue

Jewish-Canadian CBC journalist Neil Herland was confronted by pro-Palestinian protesters outside a Toronto synagogue during Yom Kippur services. The protesters shouted 'From the river to the sea' and cursed at him. Herland shared his distress and growing fear that Canada is becoming unsafe for Jews, even obtaining an Austrian passport as a backup.

The protesters shouted 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free' and 'You're going to hell.' Herland, the son of a Holocaust survivor from Romania, shared his distress and growing fear that Canada is becoming unsafe for Jews, even obtaining an Austrian passport as a backup. During the services, the cantor announced that his nephew was murdered on Rosh Hashanah in Ukraine in a suspected hate crime. Additionally, the synagogue reported a shooting attack attempt outside a synagogue in Belleville on Sunday evening, in which a police officer was seriously wounded and the shooter was critically injured. Herland described a grim reality where police stand guard outside synagogues and Jewish schools are attacked by gunfire.
