The nuclear agreement between Washington and Riyadh opens access for American companies to nuclear energy projects in the kingdom worth tens of billions of dollars. The Trump administration claims the deal will strengthen US and Middle East security through high non-proliferation standards. However, Democrats in Congress express concern that the agreement could allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium to nearly 20%, increasing the risk of military use of nuclear materials. Senator Jeff Merkley stated that Riyadh's demand to produce fuel independently instead of importing it may indicate plans beyond a peaceful program. Congress has a 90-day review period for the deal, after which lawmakers may attempt to block it. Previously, former head of Israel's National Security Council Meir Ben-Shabbat warned that the agreement could lead to a new arms race in the region.
