New airport opens: Your way to see polar bears gets shorter
A new international airport has opened in Ilulissat, Greenland, the third in the autonomous territory's expansion plan. Air Greenland has launched a direct route to Copenhagen, and Icelandair has announced a seasonal route. Prices have not yet been published.
A new international airport opened this week in Ilulissat, Greenland's third-largest town, after final approval from the Danish national aviation authority. It is the third airport to open in Greenland since 2024, as part of an expansion plan for the Danish autonomous territory. CEO Jens Lauridsen called the opening "a historic milestone" for the region. The 2,200-meter runway allows for larger aircraft and direct connections to Europe. Air Greenland launched a direct route to Ilulissat from Copenhagen, and Icelandair announced a seasonal route from Keflavik. Prices have not yet been published. The town, home to about 5,000 residents, lies near the frozen fjords of Disko Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The headline suggests a shorter route to viewing polar bears, but the body does not address this.
