Flash floods inundated large areas of Phuket Island in Thailand overnight, one of the country's main tourist destinations. According to reports, all three districts of the southern island were affected by the flooding, including Phuket City, the island's capital. About 100 households were damaged, but no casualties were reported, according to Phuket Deputy Governor Romdon Hiawa. He said water levels began to recede toward noon, but some low-lying areas remained flooded. Mudslides also occurred in parts of Phuket. Thailand's Meteorological Department warned of heavy and persistent rain in the south of the country until Wednesday, which could cause flash floods and further landslides. Flooding has affected many areas of Thailand since mid-September, and according to the Department of Disaster Prevention, at least 83 deaths have been reported nationwide as of Monday.
