Lindsay Clancy, a nurse and mother of three from Massachusetts, killed her children in January 2023. Her trial ended in a deadlock after one juror refused to declare her not criminally responsible due to her mental state. Criminologist Shir Shemesh explains the background and the implications.
Lindsay Clancy, a maternity-ward nurse and mother of three from Massachusetts, killed her three children in January 2023, while her husband left the house for a 45-55 minute errand. Her trial ended in a deadlock after 11 of 12 jurors were convinced that, because of her mental state, she was not criminally responsible for her actions, but one juror refused, and the trial was voided. Criminologist Shir Shemesh explains that Clancy suffered from severe anxiety and depression after the birth of her youngest son, received a cocktail of 12-13 medications, and was even hospitalized for several days, but was not diagnosed with postpartum psychosis. Shemesh notes that 9 of the 12 jurors were women, which could cause bias, but it is hard to determine what led to the deadlock.
