The parents of a 13-year-old American teenager have filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing it of negligence in protecting children from the dangers of artificial intelligence, after their daughter used the company's tools integrated into the search engine to plan suicide and funeral arrangements via a school-issued laptop. The lawsuit was filed on Monday, November 2, 2026, in a California court, in the first known case accusing Google of negligence over the integration of AI technologies into low-cost Chromebooks used by millions of students in the United States and other countries. The case centers on a girl from North Carolina, referred to in court documents as "Emma," described by her family as an academically excellent and happy child who played music and participated in Girl Scouts. According to the lawsuit, the teenager had no prior mental health issues but began experiencing a severe psychological crisis that gradually developed over months of using Google's AI-powered search engine on her school computer. On March 17, the school's electronic monitoring system flagged a file titled "Funeral," prompting officials to notify the girl's parents. After receiving the alert, the mother logged into her daughter's account and watched her write a farewell message in real time, before the father intervened immediately. The court documents note that the school had blocked Google's Gemini app.
