JPMorgan Chase Bank subsidiary discriminated against conservative customers, US investigation finds
A US investigation found that WePay Inc., a JPMorgan Chase Bank subsidiary, discriminated against conservative customers by closing accounts for selling pro-Trump merchandise. The review by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency examined nine major banks under a 2025 executive order. WePay has since been shut down.
The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released a supervisory review on Wednesday finding that a JPMorgan Chase Bank subsidiary, WePay Inc., discriminated against political conservatives. The review was conducted under President Donald Trump's August 2025 executive order 'Guaranteeing Fair Access to Banking for All Americans' and examined nearly 100,000 complaints and over 50,000 documents from the nine largest banks under OCC supervision. Specific instances included WePay closing accounts associated with pro-Trump merchandise, such as MAGA hats, and a nonprofit's account due to its positions on LGBTQ issues. A JPMorgan spokesperson told CBS News that the subsidiary has since been shut down, stating it 'did not meet our expectations.' The review also found that PNC Bank declined credit to a media company due to employees' personal politics, and Capital One rejected both Democratic pro-abortion organizations and a pro-gun group. Currency Comptroller Jonathan V. Gould called the findings 'irrefutable evidence' of discrimination and announced further regulatory changes. The Bank Policy Institute, a trade group, responded by supporting clear standards for fair access.
