Reports in Arab media claim that a large cargo ship owned by the United Arab Emirates sank yesterday (Wednesday) in the Strait of Hormuz, with thousands of containers on board allegedly containing iPhone 18 devices and luxury perfumes from Dubai. According to the reports, the ship hit a naval mine that caused an explosion. However, other media outlets worldwide claim the sinking resulted from an Iranian attack. The incident occurs against the backdrop of the sharpest increase in Iranian attacks on shipping since the start of the war between the United States and Israel against Iran. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported at least five incidents in the last 48 hours. Two additional container ships, GFS Pride and Cape Dao, also sank after being hit in attacks. According to a Financial Times analysis, 24 ships were damaged in the two weeks ending October 11. The increase in the rate of attacks is emerging as a factor in a sharp decline in the volume of oil shipments passing through the strait. Two Iranian sources told Reuters that Iran has begun using new methods against vessels, aiming to influence the outcome of the US midterm elections.
