In the normalization of Israeli prisons as torture camps

A new Haaretz investigation reveals systematic brutality within Israeli prisons, which have been operating as a network of torture camps for three years under direct orders from National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, amid societal and judicial normalization of these practices.

A new investigation by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reveals a deeply entrenched lack of concern for what happens within the walls of Israeli prisons, specifically a campaign of torture against Palestinian prisoners, especially following October 7, 2023, and under direct orders from National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. This indifference is not limited to the Israeli public but extends even to the judges of the Israeli Supreme Court. The newspaper highlights that Israeli security prisons have been operating as a network of torture camps for three years, a fact previously confirmed by several human rights organizations before this investigation. Starvation, severe violence, scabies outbreaks, and harsh living conditions are all part of the daily reality for thousands of prisoners. These practices are not conducted in secret but are an announced policy that forms the centerpiece of Ben-Gvir's election campaign. These facts were uncovered by investigations by leading global media outlets, human rights reports, and petitions submitted to the Supreme Court. Yet, the broad Israeli public remained indifferent, and even Supreme Court judges chose to show indifference and normalize the situation. After numerous delays and procrastination, the court issued only two rulings against this policy: in September 2025, it ordered adequate nutrition for prisoners, and in June 2026, it ordered the prison service to resume Red Cross visits.
