Stanford University, one of the world's most prestigious institutions, sparked controversy after it was revealed that it used artificial intelligence to replace a Latino student in a promotional photo with a young Black woman, in an effort to showcase diversity and inclusion. The university's Department of Residential and Dining Enterprises edited a photo of three students, replacing Billy Ramirez, who identifies as Latino, with a Black figure created by AI. Two other students in the photo received similar 'treatment,' with their faces altered to appear thinner and more attractive. The poster was placed in a campus residential complex as if it were a regular photograph. Ramirez said he discovered the replacement from a friend who sent him both images, initially laughing but later becoming angry. 'Seeing my identity changed and being left out of the picture made me feel silenced and erased from a representation that was supposed to include me,' he said. The university confirmed the story, removed the poster, and stated that the alteration violated its policy. The incident occurs against the backdrop of the Trump administration's fight against diversity programs in private academic institutions, including a proposal to revoke tax exemptions from institutions that consider race in admissions. At Stanford itself, a committee investigating antisemitism determined that diversity programs ignored Jews and Israelis.
