A court in Rio de Janeiro convicted lawyer Haribeto de Miranda Jordão Filho of racism for calling for the removal of Jews from leadership positions at the Brazilian Bar Institute (IAB) and for closing the local Jewish federation. On Wednesday, the court sentenced him to two years in an open prison but commuted the sentence to community service. The incident leading to the conviction occurred on March 20, 2024, during an institute meeting broadcast on YouTube, where he demanded the removal of all Jews from the institute's management and committee chairs. He argued that religious Jews had no place in the institute and demanded their removal based on religious affiliation. In the same speech, he also called for closing the Jewish Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FIERJ). The Jewish community in Brazil condemned the remarks. The president of the Jewish Confederation of Brazil (CONIB), Claudio Lottenberg, welcomed the disciplinary proceedings and said anti-Semitism has been rising since the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023. The lawyer announced he would appeal the conviction.
