Heavy rains flood displacement tents in central Gaza
Heavy rains since Friday evening have flooded numerous displacement tents in central Gaza, particularly north of Nuseirat camp and Deir al-Balah, worsening conditions for displaced families. Aid groups have begun distributing tents and tarpaulins.
Heavy rains that have been falling on the Gaza Strip since Friday evening have flooded a large number of displaced persons' tents north of the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, as the area is affected by an atmospheric depression accompanied by rain and active winds, exacerbating the suffering of displaced families living in tents lacking the minimum protection requirements. Press reports on Saturday morning indicated that rainwater flooded a number of displaced persons' tents in various areas of the Strip, due to the atmospheric depression and heavy rainfall. The reports stated that the atmospheric depression led to the flooding of large numbers of displaced persons' tents in different areas, coinciding with thunderstorms and strong winds, warning of expanding risks as rainy weather continues. The repercussions of the rains are exacerbated by the widespread destruction of infrastructure and rainwater and sewage drainage networks, in addition to the spread of displacement camps in low-lying areas lacking the necessary equipment for water drainage. Humanitarian estimates in the same report indicated that about 162,000 tents in the Strip need replacement, amid a shortage of shelter materials and protective means.
