Yemen's President Rashad al-Alimi fired senior political and military officials this morning (Thursday), following the failure of the counterattack against the Houthis and the loss of vast territories. Among those fired: the Minister of Information, the official responsible for the city of Taiz, and a sub-major general in the army. The move aims to appoint professional commanders who will stop the Houthis, who have reached about 60 kilometers from Aden, the capital of southern Yemen. The failed offensive last month left thousands dead on both sides and lost vital areas along the Red Sea coast. Saudi Arabia, Yemen's ally, fought alongside it, but its air superiority did not translate into ground gains. The Yemeni government is facing severe public criticism and is called a 'hotel government' due to its management of the state from hotels in Riyadh and its dependence on Saudi funding.
