First publication: The expected change in headstones of fallen soldiers who were kidnapped and brought to burial

The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee is expected to discuss regulations that would allow adding the word 'kidnapped' and the date of abduction on headstones of fallen soldiers who were kidnapped and brought to burial. The move was initiated following a request from families of fallen soldiers from the War of Resurrection, and the defense establishment seeks to complete the replacement of headstone cushions for 20 IDF fallen soldiers and three civilian headstones before October 7.

The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, chaired by MK Boaz Bismut, is expected to discuss tomorrow (Tuesday) regulations for military cemeteries that would allow adding the word 'kidnapped' and the date of abduction on headstones of fallen soldiers who were kidnapped and brought to burial. The move comes following a request from families of fallen soldiers who were kidnapped during the War of Resurrection and brought back to Israel, who sought to give expression on the headstone cushion to the unusual circumstances. The request was led by Ruby Chen, father of Staff Sergeant Itai Chen, may his memory be blessed. The matter was examined by the public council for the commemoration of the soldier, which recommended approving the inscription while maintaining the principle of uniformity. Immediately after the approval of the regulations, the replacement of headstone cushions for 20 fallen soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces and three civilian headstones is expected to begin, in coordination with the families. The intention is to complete the replacement before October 7, hence the urgency in convening the committee.
