European AI model with trillion parameters enters open availability phase

French company Mistral has made the weights of its AI model "Large 4" available for download and local operation, focusing on programming and cybersecurity applications, following a public preview phase involving government entities and companies.

French company Mistral has made the weights of its AI model "Large 4" available for download and local operation, allowing organizations and developers to use it on their own technical infrastructure without relying on the company's cloud services, with a focus on programming and cybersecurity applications. The release follows a public preview phase that began in October 2026, during which the model was tested with participation from government entities and companies to improve its performance before releasing its weights to the public. Mistral describes the model as its strongest publicly available product in the cybersecurity field, noting that running it within organizations' systems gives them greater control over their data and technical capabilities and reduces their dependence on external service providers. This step does not mean the model is available without conditions, as its use is subject to a license that allows modification, development, and redistribution, but imposes specific commercial requirements on companies that offer the same models as a service to others. Mistral's Vice President of Science, Pierre Stock, told Reuters that publishing model weights gives users assurance of continued access to its technologies even if the policies or services of the developing companies change, but he acknowledged that making weights available makes restricting access to them more difficult.
