English translation of Emile Tuma's book "Social Movements in Islam" published

The English translation of Emile Tuma's book "Social Movements in Islam" has been published by the academic publisher Brill as part of the Historical Materialism series, under the title Islam, Marxism, and Social Change. The book was edited and introduced by Dr. Abd Kanaaneh, and translated into English by Dr. Ruba Sam'an.

Recently published by the academic publisher Brill (De Gruyter Brill) is the English translation of the book "Social Movements in Islam" by Marxist thinker and historian Emile Tuma, as part of the prestigious Historical Materialism series. The book is titled Islam, Marxism, and Social Change: Emile Tuma's Social Movements in Islam. It was edited and introduced with an extensive study by Dr. Abd Kanaaneh from the Department of Middle Eastern History at Tel Aviv University, and translated into English by Dr. Ruba Sam'an. Emile Tuma (1919–1985) was a native of Haifa and a leader of the League of National Liberation, editor-in-chief and founder of the newspaper "Al-Ittihad", and is considered one of the most prominent Marxist historians in the Arab world. The book traces the transition from tribe to nation in Mecca and Medina, reads the emergence of Shiite thought and the revolutionary current in Ismailism and the rationalism of the Mu'tazila as expressions of social protest, views Ash'arism as the ideology of the feudal era, and reads Shu'ubiyya as a reaction to the failures of authority. The second section examines the relationship between religion and nationalism in the Arab world, the clash between the Muslim Brotherhood and Arab nationalism, and sectarianism as a tool in the hands of Ottoman rule, French colonialism, and Israeli authority. In the first part of the book, Dr. Kanaaneh places Emile Tuma in his historical and intellectual context, showing that his project was a conscious political intervention aimed at reclaiming the progressive and egalitarian elements in the Islamic heritage.
