Egypt calls for diplomatic solution in Yemen ahead of parliamentary vote on military support for Saudi Arabia

Egypt has called for exhausting diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Yemen, ahead of a parliamentary vote on October 26 to authorize the army to provide military support to Saudi Arabia against the Houthi group. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said his country calls for "exploring all opportunities" to reach a diplomatic solution.

Egypt has called for exhausting diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Yemen, ahead of the Egyptian parliament's vote on October 26 to authorize the army to provide military support to Saudi Arabia against the Iran-aligned Houthi group. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said his country calls for "exploring all available opportunities" to reach a diplomatic solution to the Yemeni conflict, coinciding with political and military moves ahead of the anticipated parliamentary vote. This development comes amid rising regional tensions and the expansion of the US-Israeli war on Iran, along with concerns about its repercussions on regional stability, particularly in light of the confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had called last Saturday for an emergency parliamentary session to consider authorizing the army for military intervention in support of Saudi Arabia. After a closed session on Sunday, lawmakers postponed the vote to October 26 to allow more time for deliberations. As part of Egyptian moves, Abdelatty and the head of the General Intelligence Service, Major General Hassan Rashad, traveled to Riyadh on Wednesday to deliver a written message from Sisi to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a step reflecting coordination between Cairo and Riyadh on regional developments. Sisi said that "the Egyptian military effort is to defend the territory of the kingdom."
