The Ministry of Health has issued a severe travel warning for Africa following a deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to ministry data, over 9,800 confirmed cases have been reported in Congo, with at least 4,750 resulting in death. Additional cases have recently been discovered in Kenya and Nigeria, although the Ministry of Health emphasizes that community transmission in these countries is not yet known. The ministry unequivocally recommends avoiding all travel to affected provinces in Congo, and non-essential travel to the rest of the country and neighboring states: Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Travelers to Kenya and Nigeria are advised to carefully consider the necessity of their trip. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. Anyone who has been in affected areas and develops a fever above 38 degrees Celsius or other symptoms within 21 days is asked to stay home and contact the Ministry of Health hotline at *5400.
