Did not condemn Israel — world-famous artist faces boycott
Ed Sheeran is at the center of a boycott after removing rapper Macklemore from his tour. Artists are refusing to perform, a protest is planned in Philadelphia, and an Irish radio station has pulled his songs from the airwaves. Sheeran has not taken a public stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but has come under pressure from both sides.
Ed Sheeran's tour has become embroiled in controversy after the exclusion of rapper Macklemore. Macklemore, as the opening act, made political statements in support of Palestinians, criticized US authorities, and performed a protest song. This drew criticism, including from the Israeli-American Council, and stadiums refused to host concerts with his participation. Ultimately, Macklemore was removed. In protest, other artists, including the Irish band Biig Piig, withdrew from the tour. A protest by pro-Palestinian organizations is planned in Philadelphia. Irish radio station Classic Hits has stopped playing Sheeran's songs. Sheeran himself stated he is 'shocked' by the conflict, called the suffering a humanitarian tragedy, and pledged to donate $2 million for aid. He also asked Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft to match the donation. Sheeran finds himself caught between two sides: he has not expressed support for Israel, yet still faces a boycott following Macklemore's removal.
