Greece is discussing the strategic capabilities of F-35 fighter jets amid ongoing tensions with Turkey. Athens is accelerating the modernization of its air force and preparing for a potential regional confrontation. Commentators on a Greek television channel highlighted the range of the American fighters: a radius of about 200 kilometers demonstrates capabilities in airspace, while a range of about 900 kilometers allows reaching the areas of Istanbul and Ankara. It was claimed on air that the F-35 can cover a distance of about 1,200 kilometers, penetrate deep into Turkish territory, and return to base without refueling. The discussion followed a visit to Athens by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who emphasized the US commitment to Greece's security and raised the issue of a possible future transfer of F-35s to Turkey. Concurrently, Greece has finalized an arms deal with the US worth up to $4 billion, providing for the modernization of additional F-16 fighters and the purchase of modern missiles and aerial bombs. In 2024, Greece signed agreements to acquire 20 F-35 fighters and 35 Black Hawk helicopters. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias stated that after the modernization is complete, the Air Force will have over 100 F-16 Viper fighters, to be joined by French Rafales and American F-35s. The first F-35 is expected to be delivered to Greece in 2028. Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis issued a warning to Turkey, stating that any attempt to violate sovereign rights will be met with a response using all means.
