Belgian intelligence: Iran behind attacks on Jewish institutions in the country

The head of the Belgian Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (CUTA), Gert Vercauteren, confirmed that two terrorist attacks against Jewish institutions in Belgium were carried out following calls from Iran. The explosion in Liège and the vehicle arson in Antwerp, from March 2026, are defined as part of a coordinated campaign.

The head of the Belgian Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (CUTA), Gert Vercauteren, confirmed in an interview with RTBF that two terrorist attacks that occurred in Belgium in March 2026 were carried out following direct calls from Iran. According to him, the attackers acted with certainty according to instructions from Tehran to target Jewish targets around the world. The first attack was an explosion of a device near a synagogue in the city of Liège on March 9, and later that week a vehicle was completely set on fire in the Jewish quarter of Antwerp. There were no casualties in either case. The Israeli ambassador to Belgium, David Seranga, responded with irony on X and called for European policy towards Iran to reflect the level of threat. The threat level for Israelis in Belgium is currently defined as Level 2 (occasional threat) according to the National Security Council.
