The protest nearly replicates the stickers placed against former President Joe Biden in 2022, when prices soared due to the war in Ukraine and the post-COVID supply crisis. According to AAA data, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline stands at about $4.44, compared to about $3.20 a year ago. The price of a gallon of diesel has reached a new high of about $6.40. The current surge comes amid disruptions in oil supply from the Middle East: the war with Iran has impacted tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, and Houthi attacks have affected alternative supply routes. Trump addressed the prices this week, telling his supporters in North Carolina that it is a "very cheap price" relative to what the US achieved in the war, and estimated that prices are expected to drop quickly. According to a report in the New York Post, similar stickers have also been placed on food products in protest of the president's tariff policy.
