Barbie storm for Hanukkah: Mattel launches Jewish doll with prominent nose - and the internet is divided

Mattel has launched its first official Hanukkah Barbie doll, featuring a prominent and pointed nose, sparking a storm on social media within the Jewish community. Alongside criticism over the use of stereotypes, some supported the design. The doll, priced at $28, sold out within hours.

Toy company Mattel has launched its first official 'Hanukkah Barbie' doll as part of its holiday sweater collection. The doll, priced at $28, features brown hair, olive skin tone, and a blue sweater with a menorah, dreidels, and Stars of David. The launch sparked a storm on social media due to the doll's nose, which is designed to be prominent, pointed, and significantly larger compared to the familiar button nose of traditional Barbie models. Many users on Reddit claimed the design mimics stereotypical features and even compared it to hostile illustrations from the past. Alongside criticism, the launch attracted antisemitic reactions online, linking the doll to blood libels and the war in Gaza. On the other hand, Yael Bokler expressed enthusiasm and noted the Jewish heritage of the brand's founder, Ruth Handler. The director of the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, Daphna Michaelson Janet, said that the nose has a beautiful face and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Despite the debate, the doll sold out within hours.
