Amid a wave of doctors emigrating from Israel and concerns over a shortage of specialists, Shaare Zedek Medical Center announced the appointment of two senior doctors who recently immigrated to the country. Dr. Jeremy Rees, a neurologist who arrived from the UK after 26 years of work, was appointed director of the Neuro-Oncology Unit. Dr. Daniel Agion, a neurosurgeon from the United States, was appointed director of the Spine Neurosurgery Unit. Agion was in Israel on vacation on October 7, 2023, and went to treat the wounded in the south. He recently immigrated with his family. The head of the Neurosurgery Department, Dr. Nevo Margalit, emphasized the severe shortage of neurosurgeons in Israel and said Agion's joining is "dramatic." Shaare Zedek CEO, Prof. Ofer Merin, welcomed the appointments and called Rees's immigration "a moving Zionist act."
