AI Accuracy in Diagnosing Heart Diseases: Test Results

Scientists have developed an AI system that analyzes standard ECGs to detect hidden signs of heart failure and valve pathologies. A study involving 67,000 patients showed the technology identifies up to 81% of heart failure cases and up to 90% of valve pathologies. The AI serves as a triage tool, not a final diagnosis.

Scientists have developed an innovative artificial intelligence system capable of analyzing a standard electrocardiogram and, within seconds, identifying hidden signs of heart failure and dangerous valve pathologies, as reported by Egeszseg Kalauz. ECGs have been used for about a century, but their diagnostic capabilities for these conditions are limited—confirmation typically requires echocardiography, which can involve months of waiting. A large-scale study involving 67,000 American patients demonstrated that the technology identified up to 81% of people with heart failure and up to 90% of patients with heart valve pathologies. Researchers emphasize that the AI does not provide a final diagnosis but serves as a triage tool. Clinical Director of the British Heart Foundation, Sonya Babu-Narayan, noted that automated analysis effectively identifies patients in the highest risk groups for priority referral to in-depth examination. Professor Fu Xiong Ng proposed integrating the model into hospital systems to check all cardiograms. The next step will be the creation of portable medical devices with AI support.
