After 82 years: Nazi submarine discovered on the seabed

A German World War II submarine, U-672, which was lost 82 years ago, has been identified off the coast of Devon, UK. The submarine was scuttled by its 52 crew members, all of whom survived, after being damaged by the Royal Navy. Its location remained unknown due to an error in recording the coordinates.

A German World War II submarine, model U-672, has been discovered after 82 years on the seabed off the coast of Devon, UK. A team of divers from Plymouth identified the submarine about 32 kilometers from the shores of Salcombe, at a depth of approximately 70 meters. The submarine was attacked by the British Royal Navy ship "Balfour" in July 1944. After being damaged, the submarine's commander brought it to the surface to save his crew. All 52 crew members survived, scuttled the submarine themselves, and were taken to a prisoner-of-war camp. Its location remained unknown due to an error in recording the coordinates in the British Navy log, which placed it about 74 kilometers from its actual location. German historian Dr. Axel Niestlé confirmed the recording error. Diver Dominic Robinson spoke with the family of the submarine's commander, who said he lived "a long and happy life" and was pleased with the discovery of the submarine.
