"Afraid to go home": A Jewish woman in the Green Party tells how she became a target
Alice Benjamin, former mayor of Oxford and a longtime member of the British Green Party, describes how she became a stranger in her party after it adopted a resolution declaring Zionism to be racism. According to her, her personal details were leaked to an antisemitic conspiracy theorist, and she is afraid to go home. The resolution passed by a vote of 1,022 to 813, and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar declared party leader Zack Polanski persona non grata in Israel.
Alice Benjamin, former mayor of Oxford and a longtime member of the British Green Party, tells in an interview with Israel Hayom how she became a stranger in the party that yesterday (Sunday) adopted a resolution declaring Zionism to be racism and calling for the elimination of the State of Israel. The resolution passed by a vote of 1,022 to 813, rejecting amendments meant to protect Jewish members. According to Benjamin, immediately after the vote, supporters left the hall, and many were absent from the next vote on environmental issues. Benjamin describes how anti-Zionist groups leaked her personal details and those of other Jewish members to an antisemitic conspiracy theorist, who published an article about them. "I am afraid to go home," she says, noting that other Jewish members share her fear. According to her, the party has been taken over by the far left, and the issue of Gaza and Israel has become an obsession over the past two and a half years. Since Zack Polanski was elected party leader in September 2025, the Greens have radicalized their positions. Polanski, who has declared himself anti-Zionist, was absent from the vote. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar declared him persona non grata and banned his entry to Israel, claiming the party has become a terrorist-supporting body. Jewish community organizations in Britain and the Labour Party condemned the resolution. The Greens themselves are in crisis: four of the party's five MPs publicly opposed the resolution, and the chair of Jewish Greens is considering her future in the party.
