The growing demand for oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating Iranian attacks, has led to an exceptional salary offer for tanker captains: about $100,000 per month, including a $50,000 bonus per voyage, according to a report in the Financial Times. The regular salary of captains is $15,000 per month, and regular workers, who come from poor countries such as the Philippines, India, and Indonesia, can earn six times the usual amount. However, they must contend with the constant risk of missile or drone attacks from Iran, which have increased in the past week. Since September 20, at least 14 attacks on ships have been recorded, four of them since Saturday. Maritime transport rates have soared to a record $1.3 million per day, compared to $20,000-$50,000 last year. Insurance has risen to up to $20 million per voyage. Since the outbreak of the war on February 28, 93 ships have been damaged and 24 seafarers have been killed. Ship owners are threatening to fire those who refuse to sail, according to the general secretary of the Indian seafarers' organization.
