A new study published in the journal npj Aging by a team led by computational biologist Dmitry Kryukov from Skolkovo Institute in Russia states that eternal life is scientifically impossible. The researchers conducted mathematical simulations examining the impact of somatic mutations on body organs. The results showed that even in an optimistic scenario where all age-related diseases are prevented, the median life expectancy would be 146 to 194 years – about twice the current one. Cells in organs that do not regenerate easily, such as the heart and brain, continue to accumulate many mutations and constitute the most limiting factor. The researchers emphasize that the model is not intended to predict human lifespan in the future but to serve as a tool for evaluating various biological processes on aging. According to them, the framework they developed represents 'a critical first step toward breaking down aging into computationally tractable mechanistic components.'
